"To understand Carl Orff, you have to know both where he was coming from (academia, with a strong interest in pre-classical European music and Classical Greek music, as well as a strong to desire to reduce the perhaps overly complex music of Wagner and Mahler to a simpler mode), and where he was leading to. Carmina Burana only seems an anomaly if you don't see it in context.

This disc ranges from late 13th century compositions to late 20th century compositions, directed by one of the pioneers of the Ancient Music movement. Orff's influence is heard in how we INTERPRET ancient music, and in how some contemporary composers' (Arvo Part and even Ligeti) own work shows that influence.

Konrad Ruhland does an excellent job of tying the past to the future, using Carl Orff as the bow."
