Merrick | 10/27/2007 (2 out of 5 stars) "There is little to no life in this version of "Fancy Free," in spite of the fact that it starts off with an interesting "juke box" version of one of the songs. The jazzy, hyperactive parts of the ballet are plodding and too carefully measured. The whole performance comes off more like a stately march rather than the exhuberant bravado that Bernstein wrote.
I wasn't satisfied with the Overture to "Candide" or the Three Dance Episodes from "On the Town," either. Where is the puffed-out chest? Where is the bright humor? Where is the $#*%@! JAZZ, for Pete's sake?! Bernstein was a showman, and Slatkin is normally up to the task. Somehow, he misses the mark here." |
