Synopsis

Album Description
Opium is a synthpop band consisting of members in Israel and Russia, with musical, lyrical, and production contributions from both countries. The band has been around since the early 90's, but has never released an album until now, in 2004. Opium finds their musical roots in the synthpop and new wave of the 80's, but builds onto that foundation with the production sounds of today. The vocalist is passionate and talented, sounding like a classically trained version of Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan, and the songs are built around strong melodies and sensual lyricism. This album has been in the works for several years as the band has worked to translate Russian lyrics into English, polished their programing and recording techniques, and created an album that can leave a mark for many years to come.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I was in a risk taking mood when I bought this CD, having heard only one song (Perfect Stranger). Well in this case, the risk payed off. Most CD's require a few listens to let them grow on you, but this CD is pretty catchy and I was hooked on the first listen. Although Opium has a unique sound of their own, the first comparison that comes to mind is Erasure, particularly when they were in their prime in the 80's. The singer IIiya Ivanov has a beautiful voice, somewhere in between Erasure's Andy Bell and Depeche Mode's Martin Gore. The music is very emotional, mostly about love and love lost. I would definately recommend this CD to synthpop lovers, or people who are sick of the same-old same-old on the radio."
