Synopsis

The Opera Lover's Broadway--more aptly named "Kiri Te Kanawa and some others"--is an eclectic mixed bag of composers and singers. The outrageous high C's in Nilsson's "I Could Have Danced All Night" and Sutherland's "Make Believe" will topple you quicker than a hurricane. Cesare Siepi's selections from Kiss Me Kate and London's Old Man River are appropriate and tuneful. Although Eileen Farrell's Carousel arrangements overwhelm both song and singer, she gloriously delivers, with an impressive understanding of the style. Te Kanawa and Carreras, singing excerpts from West Side Story, are beautiful, thanks to Leonard Bernstein's stellar conducting. The light and lyrical pieces Te Kanawa sings with Nelson Riddle's Orchestra seem pleasantly out of place. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

CD Reviews

Opera on Broadway
Rachel Casteel | Camano Island, WA USA | 09/29/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I love songs from Broadway and I love voices from opera. When I saw them combined in this CD, I knew I would have to give it a try. I think it is fabulous! Te Kanawa is, as always, very versatile and does a great job in these selections; I especially like her version of "I Didn't Know What Time It Was", a song that is not very well known. George London singing "Ol' Man River" is great, and Cesare Siepi's rich voice is simply beautiful in "So In Love". "One Hand, One Heart" is one of my favorite songs of all time, and Carreras and Te Kanawa give it depth that most musical stars cannot. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates great voices and loves the music from Broadway."
