Moscow's Bolshoi and St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theaters competed for Tchaikovsky ballet premieres during the late 1800s, and although the Mariinsky got the first crack at The Nutcracker, this 1960 recording shows the Bolshoi performing as if it owns the score. We would appreciate more spacious sound, but the detail and virtuosic playing more than make up for this effect of the recording's age. --David Vernier
