It was with the Alegres that the norteño sound came into its own. Their combination of close harmony duet vocals, accordion, and bajo sexto (a deep 12-string guitar) was fabulously popular and influential. The Texan star Flaco Jiménez based his whole approach on their sound, and it formed the basis for the innovations of modern groups like the Tigres del Norte. This album contains many of their defining hits from their days on Falcon records, and shows their pure, classic sound, which would in later years (documented on their Sony albums) often be filled out with horns and other instruments in an attempt to keep up with popular trends. --Elijah Wald
