CD Reviews

Excellente vari?t? d'un groupe musical dou?
Gary A. Wexler | Long Beach, New York United States | 05/13/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Nous Non Plus' first work together as a new name group sans Kit Kat and Clermont is very good.

Starting off, L'Amant, is a nice ballad showcasing how supple Celine Dijon's voice can be. I don't know what she is singing about (it's French of course) but it seems she is lamenting about an affair and getting angry about as the song progresses. Accompaning guitar work lends a nice folksy sound.

Next up is a tribute to garage style rock, French style, with Lawnmower Boy. Great energy in the style of Plastic Bertrand.

Fille Atomique carries this high energy Francophone beat into track 3, but at slightly slower pace with a lttle more synthesizer and female vocals.

Now, of course you have heard One Night in Paris? A farsical English sung ditty about, well spending one night in "Paris".

It is very catchy with some clever lyrics. I am suprised it isn't on top 40 yet. What's a soup kitchen? Yes... that soup is hot!

Tant Pis Pour Toi is the kind of track you bop to with a fast beat and almost angry vocals telling you that it is bad for you to have too much (or something like that).

Le Chateau is my favorite track. It's got that airy, sexy singing, this time by Jean Luc along with a soothing synth sound that goes up and down like a boat on the ocean with some delicate piano work thrown in. It's a good 5 and a half minutes of breezy recollections of being at a party at some castle.

Monokini starts off with a regular guitar riff and all of a sudden your'e on a late 60's game show with some beautiful brass blowing by Francios Hardonne. Then, the Ray Conniff singers (Celine and Bonnie) chime in about going to the beach with only half of your swimming attire. You have seen those old fashion photographs from Europe, haven't you? A nice whistle finishs it up.

Premier Baiser gets back to the slower ballad like rythm of L'Amant and Le Chateau, but as a well matched duet between Celine and Jean Luc singing and speaking about a first kiss. There is use of a really nice sounding instrument in use here. It sounds like trumpet or french horn with special effects... really awesome sound.

La Ballade de Tourette lets Celine strut her stuff again. Again, some nice peaceful guitar work here.

Apres-Soleil, an instrumental, finishes up like melted caramel over a bowl of ice cream while lying by the fireplace...or the beach. A slow paced almost western movie sunset soundtrack sound.Yes... there is another musical instrument at work here that I cannot identify. But it's got that slow violin sound. Maybe that's what it is!

Although my favorite part of this CD is the whole second half, all tracks show the wide scope of talent and agilities in these preformers. I am Looking forward to more music from Nous Non Plus. I am giving it 5 stars for effort and variety, although I would rather hear more of the slower, sexier melodic tracks. I'm beginning to think this is where Nous Non Plus really shines."

"This is a new band from France who did really well at Noise Pop. They used to be called Les Sans Culottes. Out of the ashes of that band, we start this new revolution. I caught the end of their set and wrongly thought that they were a band that did a lot of cover songs like Stereo Total. I saw them do a song by The Unicorns, and thought that this was their bag. But I find this record, which has been out for a few months, and find the opposite is true. Nous Non Plus has plenty of original songs. This is the best French band in a long while. They have some cool songs like "One Night In Paris" and "Monokini." There is a little jazz and a little punk, and a lot of rock and roll. This is le bonne temps roulZ. They have names like Celine Dijon and Jean-Luc Retard. This band is sexy and entertaining. It is a great experience.
