Synopsis

Norman Foote's sixth album for young listeners once again demonstrates his clever ability to be very cool and warm at the same time. The first track, "Loose Tooth," with its humorous twist-ending is followed by the catchy and aptly named "Snuggle Up." It's obvious Foote likes kids and is empathetic toward them. In "Think of Something Good" the listener is encouraged to look on the bright side of life when things seem a little dark and cloudy. Norman sings: "So try to think of something good, something you like to do / There's no point feeling miserable / it doesn't look good on you." The song "Deeper Than the Deep Blue" has a tender simplicity children should find fun to sing along to while giving them that happy, secure feeling that music for the very young should impart. With an easygoing feel and production approach throughout, the styles range from lounge music and bossa nova to zydeco and beyond. Whatever the style, 1000 Pennies is always grounded by Foote's soothing voice and pleasantly understated delivery. --Martha Johnson

CD Reviews

An album worth passing on to friends

(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you and your children enjoy listening to stories you'll probably love this album. Each song is like a little story. As you listen to them they leave you anxiously anticipating what the next verse of the song will be. You can usually bet it will be something silly or mischievous. Norman Foote's music has the ability to turn everyday events, places and things into something special. The songs provide a different way of looking at the world that kids and parents can relate to. The messages in the songs are the types of things I want my kids thinking about.

The music is loads of fun to listen to, my kids and I never seem to get tired of listened to it. Parents will have a tough time holding back a smile. The quality of the music is excellent, with great instrumental work. The little extras, such as the sounds of the wind blowing or pennies dropping into a piggy bank can be found throughout the album. They are well done and add to the music. The artist's enthusiasm and love for life seems to come through the music. His enthusiasm for life is contagious. Lot's of toe-tapping fun! Good Stuff!"

"My mother-in-law gave this CD to my son for his birthday. He requests it everytime we go in the car. It's the most sophisticated kids music we've ever heard...and it doesn't drive me crazy. I highly recommend it. Thank you Norman for such great music!!"
