CD Reviews

Absolutely, positively kicks butt

"Wow...talk about an albumn that will blow you away. If there's a Noir Desir albumn to cut your teeth on, this is the one. Fair warning, though: this is probably their best stuff, so this albumn will spoil you. (Not that the rest of their stuff is bad--quite the contrary.) If their early stuff sounds a little REM-like, in this albumn they definitely come into their own. Several English songs on the albumn make it accessible to non-francophones, and, surprisingly, they are some of the best songs on the albumn. Absolutely loved this ablumn. Get it. NOW."
Brilliant, but long unavailable in the U.S.,

"NOIR DESIR's "Tostaky" was perhaps the greatest discovery for me as a young American travelling in Europe. I saw Noir Desir, France's answer to Nirvana in the early 90's, at the Les Eurockeenes Festival in Belfort. They headlined a three day festival with bands like Lenny Kravitz, Midnight Oil, Sonic Youth, and the Black Crowes under their star billing. It was the best large rock show I have ever seen. "Tostaky" had just been released and the tens of thousands in attendance realized that Noir Desir was going to kill themselves on stage. The title track Tostaky is a melange of French and Spanish rants about the new world. Other songs, alternating in English and French, just plain rock. Noir Desir has never had U.S. distribution which has disappointed the countless converts returned from the Continent. Earlier releases were not as great. Hopefully the next one, with U.S. distribution, will follow the line established by Tostaky."
Excellent!

"Here's a band that forges rock'n'roll into something that it was never meant to be. "Noir Desir" is one of the most powerful French electric-guitar based artists on the international scene today, and this album is one of their best. The song "Tostaky" is sung in a few different languages and sounds like the Sex Pistols going glossalia! If you are new to the French alternative sound, please start with this album! It smokes!"
