"By day one of the world's most prolific pop video directors, Nigel Dick is also something of a crafted singer-songwriter, and his third album is a completely winning affair that deserves a wide audience. Whether writing songs about relationships gone awry, record company sharks or the kind of thoughts that haunt us only in the middle of the night, Weird Stain has buckets of charm, and a lot of heart. The recipient of Shy Girl, perhaps the album's sweetest moment, ought to be very pleased with herself, Lord She Could is exquisite for its title alone, and the lyrical theme of the title track is wonderfully coy, and very funny. Dick, who here writes the songs, sings them, produces them and takes all the CD sleeve photographs - its back cover proves that nobody really needs a tripod when a steady hand will do just as well - is clearly a multi-talented multi-tasker. His mandolin plucks on Invective, meanwhile, would get a round of applause from Peter Buck. Hats off, Mr Dick.
