"DG has sliced up this program and distributed it across several Strauss family compilations. Even so, the original CD is very much worth buying. It boasts wonderul, realistic sound, capturing the golden Vienna tone better than many recent intallments of the venerable New Year's concert. There's an added fillip in having the Vienna Boys Choir vocalizing two polkas, quite delightfully.
But the main attraction in 1988 was Abbado's sparkling way with the Strausses, father and son (adding a dollop of von Reznicek's zippy Donna Diana Overture, done to a turn here). Of the dozen or so New Year's concerts I know, this is the lightest and most sophisticated, updating Gemutlichkeit with finesse but no sacrifice of joy. For specialists expecting Strauss rarities, there are quite a few sprinkled in with the chestnuts, such as a mazurka from Josef Struass ("burning Love") and a major waltz from Johann ("You Millions, I Embrace You"). By the time we reach the traditional "Blue Danuabe" and Radetzky March, the heady mixture has worked its magic. Highly recommended."
