With the release of Der Ring des Nibelungen, staged in Het Muziektheater Amsterdam (2005) De Nederlandse Opera and Etcetera join hands for the first time. This live recording in Super Audio Surround Sound reflects some special features: the orchestra as part of the total concept, moved in a circle -anticlockwise- during the four operas of the Ring. The singers performed partly in front of the orchestra with their backs towards the conductor, and were practically within touching distance of the audience. The photographs in the booklets show the spectacular stage setting and highlight the exceptional character of the production.
This Ring is based on the Neue Richard-Wagner-Gesamtausgabe, making use of notes and comments by Wagners assistants. Under his authority they annotated the scores so that we now have a fairly accurate understanding of Wagner's opinion about interpretation, instrumentation, tempi, dynamics and frasing.
