Synopsis

Album Description
How do you follow a double platinum-selling debut album? You look to your roots. & what roots! Whilst Nelly Furtado's 'Whoa Nelly' 2000 debut seemed to break all the moulds going when it came to making pop music, her new 'Folklore' album explores cultural differences in a deeper, more meaningful way. Again, Furtado has worked with the production team Track & Field & between them they've turned over Nelly's thoughts on contemporary culture & its innate clashes until the 'Folklore' album popped out. Half-Portugese, raised in Toronto & as steeped in urban music as any B-boy or fly girl, Nelly's now mature enough as a songwriter to build the complicated emotions she only hinted at on 'Whoa Nelly'. The resultant set where a pulsing, vibrant collage of ideas meet pristine pop of the highest order. All with Nelly Furtado sitting right at the epicenter. UK edition features 13 tracks including 1 bonus track, 'Try' (Acoustic). Universal. 2003.

Amazing Album!

"I first discovered Nelly Furtado with her single "I'm Like a Bird" but I didn't know that was her who sang that song... Well flash forward to 2007 when I first heard her song "Say It Right". I definitely fell in love with this song so I looked it up and got Loose. I then realized that she had made two previous albums and got them too, and that was when I realized that she sang "I'm Like a Bird".

Anyway, Folklore has to be her best album. It has so much meaning in the lyrics and her style is definitely something unique and amazing. I can say now that since I have heard her older work, that her older style is definitely her best. If you like her newer style a lot, you will probably not like her older style as they are very different."
Carry on, Nelly!

""Folklore" has been with me for 4.5 years, and I still listen to this album from start to finish. Some tracks are weaker than others, but all of them flow thematically and beautifully. This is Nelly Furtado's most reflective, wise, and mellow album. I'm in the minority, but I have and love all three of her albums for different reasons when I'm in different moods, making Furtado one of my favorite artists for her versatility.

For "Folklore" alone, this is my favorite. Whereas "Whoa, Nelly!" was raw and incomplete that showed her potential and "Loose" is polished with slick dance moves, "Folklore" is somewhere in between. It's got the sort of raw emotions and aching melancholia (Try, The Grass is Green, Picture Perfect); upbeat, group-friendly, kickass beats (Forca); and defiant, in-your-face anthems (One-Trick Pony, Powerless, Explode). What I can directly relate, and what I love most about the album, are the roots that she connects to (Powerless, Saturdays, Island of Wonder) from her parents' home country of Portugal to hers of Canada and the more theoretical kind in everybody.

I feel like if Furtado switched the order of her second and third album, Folklore would receive more accolade then it has right now and would have received more publicity. No matter; this gem is sure to win some more fans who wish to see Furtado's more reflective and intuitive side. Forca!"
Nelly should stick to Folk

"I feel that out of her english pop albums this one is the best. Not saying that Loose isn't good because it is, as was Whoa Nelly! but I feel that those albums unlike this album were very mainstream and very much products of their respective times; 2001 and 2006. Folklore was made in 2003 but listening to it today it still sounds as fresh as when it was made. I really enjoy the lyrics and most of the songs are beyond good-one trick pony, powerless, explode, the grass is green, picture perfect, and saturdays, For fans of turn off the lights there's fresh off the boat. As a folkie myself I must say I truly appreciate this style and this album for Nelly. Mi Plan offers hope that she may return to this style-which I truly hope she does. She's made her money, time to make some more art. I know this album wasn't a best seller probably because it doesn't have club beats or dance pop which seems to be what's selling right now."
