Synopsis

Product Description
Ndidi (pronounced In-DEE-dee On-OOK-whoo-loo) brings together a repertoire containing traditional blues, original songs, and smoking Malagasy guitar work by the duet of Madagascar Slim and Donne Roberts. Ndidis vocals are sultry and bring to mind the great singers of the fifties. Born in British Columbia, she grew up listening to her Nigerian-born father play drums. This music fuses the contemporary rhythms of Africa to the Blues. Ndidi is an eclectic performer whose international future looks very bright.

A True Classic!

"An absolutely bewitching album!... If this doesn't bring a sustained smile to your face, and tears of joy, sadness and passion to your eyes, then you have no soul!"
A fine album, and a musician to watch

"Ndidi Onukwulu is poised to become a major figure in modern blues. She has an unusual voice that almost sounds like a young Billie Holiday (before her voice got rough), but perhaps that comes from the strong hints of jazz throughout the album. More importantly, she brings in subtle African influences. Despite her name, she was brought up in Canada, but she incorporates hints of West African music into her vision of the blues. Some of the African sound is more Madagascar, though, complements of Madagascar Slim-- a Malagasy guitarist who draws equally from D'Gary and Hendrix. So, to add it all up, this album is rooted in blues, but draws on Billie Holiday, West African and Malagasy music. That's quite a stew, and it makes for a fine album. Onukwulu is definitely one to watch.

Incidentally, Madagascar Slim not only has his own solo album out, he plays with a group called Tri Continental, which as several albums out. All are worth owning, particularly if you like the idea of blues fused with African styles.
