There is soul here and some suffering and lots of charisma and talent. Treat yourself; by the end you will feel grateful and refreshed for this great gift of music."

"I was already a fan of Larson's before hearing this music, yet I hope that this review will still come across as objective.

Now, having made that bias known - on with it!



I wish I could think of a list of artists to compare this music with, but it's hard to do. Perhaps that's simply telling of the lack of musical diversity on my CD rack, but hopefully it also says something for this extraordinary collection of music.

Still, I did hear some familiar sounds in there.



Maybe I can best compare the sound to the emotions expressed in the music.

It goes through a range. The opening track, "Prozac", evokes a feeling of calmness and slight jubilation.

"Boys", is one track that does sound like something I've heard (Ted Nugent's Stranglehold), but it's got plenty of Larson involved there as well!

"Operator" and "I Want Someone Badly" create feelings of desperation.

"Fiction" (featuring the voice of Nina Persson) sounds haunting with a twist of humor.

Certain tracks, especially the ones from "Boys Don't Cry" such as "A Softer Night" or "Rape and a Burning Polaroid" are reminiscent of Neil Young's work on the film, "Dead Man".

Much of the feeling is about pain (I'd say in various forms), but there is plenty of beauty (also in a variety of forms) to go along with it. Nathan explains that the work on FilmMusik is meant ro speak on these two things. I think it does and I think it does so very well.

He does it with an array of sounds, textures and emotion. He has succeeded in his task.

So, if you want to know how pain and beauty can be represented aurally, this CD is worth checking out. It is outstanding.
