Synopsis

Album Description
Hard-edged, confident 2009 album from the UK Electronica star. Hard Islands is melodic, musically ambitious and pushes the European Techno blueprint ever forward. The album edges towards the tougher end of Electronica occupied by Warp and Rephlex stalwarts Clark and Aphex Twin, where spine-tingling melody meets Fake's acute awareness of what works on the dancefloor. Six tracks.

CD Reviews

Not a follow-up to 'drowning...'

(4 out of 5 stars)

"only about a half hour long, this is more like an ep than a full-length album. first track 'the turtle' is alright, not fake's best, but ok. really liked track 2 'basic mountain', may be the best one on here. track 3, 'castle rising', is the longest of the 6, but doesnt really go anywhere, though it certainly has time to. very glitchy track, but not a standout at all. next track, 'the curlew', is about a minute long interlude, nothing special, just a transition/tracklist padding, like rappers do with skits. track 5, 'narrier', is short (under 4 min) but my favorite of the bunch. very dark minimal, actually would have thought this one was titled 'castle rising', but no. last track is 'fentiger', a more techno-oriented feel, until a melody comes in about halfway through, but nothing great.

i assume this album will polarize people like holdens 'the idiots are winning' did a few years ago, in that its not really an album, but only a handful of tracks with some filler in between. if youre expecting the sequel to 'drowning...', this isnt it, but there are some solid songs on here and its a great addition to the border community library."
