America's Marianne Faithfull
i. t. j. | 10/24/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This album starts off with an equally beautiful yet stands on its own cover version of Marianne Faithfull's 64/65 hit-As Tears Go By. I do prefer Marianne's version a bit more just because I like the musical arrangement a bit better and Nancy's version changes the 2nd to last line but other than that its a fine way to open this pop album. Like on Marianne's debut, Nancy also dares to cover a Beatles song with mixed success; Day Tripper. I would say her version is a bit more campy-a better musical arrangement would have made it on par because Nancy sounds good singing it. The other Beatles cover of Run For Your Life is also a mixed bag-on the one hand Nancy kinda sounds sexy on it but on the other hand she kinda sounds like a mom. Deepening her voice wasn't always successful. I move around is a song Nanc co-wrote with Mel Tillis (the same one from their 1980 duet country album Mel & Nancy) though its a definitely not a country. Its a fine tune. It Aint Me Babe is a folk song I simply adore-Nancy sounds so beautiful and I always wondered what Joan Baez would sound like if her songs had been more pop. Of course Nancy's not the soprano Joan was but this song is enjoyable. In My Room is campy as is Lies. Flowers on the Wall is upbeat and fun that will put you in a great mood.

If He'd Love Me is a beautiful ballad-similar to Marianne's ballads.

Leave My Dog Alone-is pure fun with a girl power message. Overall a great pop album.
