Um encontro com os amigos músicos
Peppino | 01/28/2006
(3 out of 5 stars)

"As grande Nana has been a musician of renown in both Brasil and the international musics community for a long time, he has more/less been accepted as a member of the ECM group of artists, the forefathers of the so-called in the states, "World musics" genre.

A live performance from Nana, whether with group or , more impressive, solo is a thing to see and hear!

This newest recording, Chegada features Nana away from the ubiquitous ECM "sterotype" and a return with a solid group sound, blending ritmos, improvisation, and a strong sense of Brasilian folcloric sounds.

I heard a set of Entusiastic ears mentioned this CD sounded a bit like a Hermeto Pascoal recording, and, IMO, while not entirely acurate can be an acceptable notion. I would say it is an extension of the original concept of the great Quarteto Novo with Hermeto, Airto , Heraldo and Theo , where the perfect marriage of jazz improvisation and traditional nordeste themes was their well executed intention.

The recording features a quinteto, performing original compositions from Nana . fellow musicians , and as many musicians do these days, to record earlier works of the masters. (unfortunate,Nana's interpretation of mestre Villa-Lobos "O Canto do Cisne Negro: is a weaker selection on the CD??)

All things told, a wonderful recording where again Africa speaks not through, but WITH Brasil! (there is "Tundekagô, a traditional from South Africa included, the umbilical has never been severed!)

A pleasant diversion from ECMlândia for mestre Nana, another in the many kingdoms of great Brasilian percussion legends!"
