CD Reviews

I adore Najoua and this album
Weather Warden | Auckland, NZ | 04/08/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I LOVE Najoua Belyzel. She is one of my favourite singers and my favourite French singer ever. I just love her voice - it's very sweet and lyrical but she can also belt it out when she wants to.

This album is absolutely stellar, it's such a gem. Every single track is fantastic, I love them all. As I listened to each track on the album for the first time, I adored them all on the first listen. Najoua has a very unique style of music - very dancey but also pop, with a hint of electronica thrown in. Her French pronounciation is brilliant and her voice is so clear I can sing along! Before I got the album I had heard "Gabriel," "Je Ferme Les Yeux," "La Berceuse" and "Rentrez Aux USA."

It's impossible to pinpoint just a couple of favourite tracks, so I'm going to do a full album review:

01. Je Ferme Les Yeux (9/10)

This was Najoua's 2nd single. This was the only track on the album that took me more then one listen to love, but now I think it's awesome. Possibly the danciest song on the CD, this is really catchy, I love the intro music. About 35 seconds in, the song gets fabulous. A slow burner of a track that I now love.

02. Celui Qu'il Me Faut (10/10)

Now this track is absolutely fantastic, when I got the album, this was the first new song I heard and I adored it on the first listen. I love Najoua's vocals, and the chorus is really catchy. Definitely a favourite.

03. Bon Baisers De Paris (10+/10)

I LOVE this song to pieces, I think this is my favourite song on the album! The music in this song is just amazing, and Najoua sounds so funky. It's really catchy too and fun to sing along to. I love the "La capitale, la fait du mal" bit. An absolute gem of a song!

04. Comme Toi (10/10)

Another favourite, this song is SO FREAKING catchy. You'll be singing along to the "comme, comme, comme, comme toi" bit on your first listen. This song is one of the only tracks on the album that isn't dancey, it has more of a rock feel with very rocky music at the end. I got hooked on this track instantly.

05. L'écho Du Bonheur (9/10)

The first ballad of the album, this song has a strong guitar feel and is quite catchy for a ballad. I think this song is one of the album's weaker songs, which is saying a lot because I still really like it! The chorus is really catchy and the song grows on you really fast.

06. Gabriel (10/10)

The very first Najoua song I ever heard, this is still a firm favourite of mine. Instantly likeable, it's easy to get addicted to this, which was Najoua's first single. The "Gabriel, Gabriel" bit at the end is extremely catchy and this song has a distinct sexy feel running through it. Another favourite, even after repeated listens.

07. Stella (10/10)

The second of two 'name' songs on the album, this is similar to "Gabriel" and just as good. It seems bland on the first listen, but give it a few more plays and the brilliance of it will just hit you. The chorus is really catchy and the dance/rock feel of the track will just hook you after a bit. The end bit of the chorus is a highlight, and so is the actual end of the song.

08. Des Maux Mal Soignés (10+/10)

My other favourite track, this is one of the album's finest moments, and is the 2nd ballad of the CD. This song is very sad as indicated by the melancholy music. The music is absolutely amazing, and when combined witb Najoua's vocals is just heartfelt and gorgeous. This song has almost moved me to tears at points. Absolutely beautiful.

09. Rentrez Aux USA (10/10)

Slightly controversial (the title translates to "Go Back To The USA") - about Najoua wanting the US troops to leave Iraq and go home, this song is awesome. With great rocky guitar and Najoua's vocals, this is a winner. This is another slow burner of a song, that takes a few listens to love, but now I can't stop listening to it!

10. Mon Sang, Le Tien (10/10)

This song is very chilled out with great relaxing music. Najoua's voice just flows over this track - about 30 seconds in, a beat kicks in, transforming the song to a soft dancey track. Still quite catchy, this is a great track to relax to.

11. Docteur Gel (9/10)

Another dancey track, this is more upbeat then the previous track. It is in a similar vein though, but is definitely faster. It sounds slow but when it kicks into the chorus, things speed up. The title translates to "Doctor Freeze."

12. La Berceuse (10/10)

If you think this song sounds like a lullaby, you'd be right because the title translates to "The Lullaby." This song is absolutely amazing, Najoua sounds adorable. She sounds wistful and dreamy on this cute track. This song does not have a steady beat, but is not boring in any way. What a great way to end the album.

My top 5 tracks in order:

01. Bon Baisers De Paris (just!)

02. Des Maux Mal Soignés

03. Comme Toi

04. Celui Qu'il Me Faut

05. Gabriel

(06. La Berceuse)

You don't need to know any French to enjoy this album. Just the music and Najoua's vocals is enough for me to love this CD. Najoua is immensely talented and I cannot wait to hear more from her. A definite 5 stars for this gem."
Amazing performance, I fully recommend it!

"A friend recommended this CD last year, I did not believe her at first but after played songs 1, 4 and 6 I become in love with Nayoua's voice and the great performance in her songs. The beat is great and I'm 100% sure that you will enjoy it as well."

"This CD is so good. If you like Francophone music (Alizee, Nolwenn, etc.) then you have to check out Najoua. Unique and uplifting. I hope she puts out something new soon cuz I'm wearing this CD out!"
