The Original Fates
(4 out of 5 stars)
"What? No one has yet reviewed the first Fates release? Then, let me be the first! I bought this album after listening to Awaken the Guardian, because I thought that album was great! I was not disapointed! While others hear some progressive elements in early Fates, I believe that didn't really come about until Ray Alder joined the group. Night on Brocken is just straight ahead execellent metal! John Arch has a great voice, as well as a unique lyrical talent! The guitars are also well done, but are more raw than in later releases. The title track is one of my favorite John Arch-era Fates tunes. Other high points for me are the first 3 cuts as well as Damnation, although I really didn't get into that tune much until listening to it a lot on the Chasing Time compilation album. If you like old Fates Warning; heck, even if you like the current Fates, do yourself a favor and pick up this CD!By the way, has anyone ever seen the original cover art? Very cartoonish! The band obviously hated it (they ripped the person responsible in the "Spectre" liner notes) and changed it. There have actually been 3 covers, although I had never seen the second one until today."
