CD Reviews

Wonderful performers

"Dag Jensen is one of my favorite bassoonists. He has an amazing technique and fabulous control over his sound and expression. His recordings of the Jolivet Concerto, as well and the Koechlin Sonata and Three Pieces are truly some of the best bassoon recordings I have ever encountered (although neither seem to be listen on Amazon anymore!).This disc is worth the price for the performances of the Hindemith and the Schoeck alone, and the Yun is piece worth investigating after hearing Jensen's performance. However, I would have preferred to hear another major work in the bassoon repertoire on this CD rather than the Schoof Impromptus. Although Jensen has the jazz idiom down (and even goes up to a high G at the end with no trouble at all!) the music seems a bit inconsequential. Perhaps we can get a recording of some American music from him (the Etler and Previn sonatas especially!)."
