CD Reviews

Ivesian Impressions
Daniel G. Berk | West Bloomfield, Michigan | 01/26/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you regret the lack of any more compositions by Charles Ives, take heart. This CD is for you, particularly the Bolcom compositions. They paint the same type of tonal pictures as did Ives, and they do so equally effectively."
Good old Vox releases a great new work
Daniel G. Berk | 12/21/1998
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I heard William Bolcom's Piano Concerto on the radio years ago and have thought about it ever since. When I found out it had been recorded, and that the recording was on a super budget Vox cd I got it right away. It was everything that you could ask for. William Bolcom plays the Piano and the Rochester Orchestra is wonderful. The work was a Bi-centenniel commission and is a masterpiece recreating the conflicting feelings of the time. Bolcom is a master of using contrast for optimal artistic purposes. Worlds collide and the light they give off lights everything. The Dance Portraits are serious razzle-dazzle. I don't know how he does it but he certainly does."
Knockout Performance of Bolcom Piano Concerto
mahlerii@aol.com | Richfield, MN | 07/06/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Charles Ives is the main force behind this concerto. Many conflicting images and musics combine and collide together. The work begins nostagically, but gradually grows disullusioned. Well recorded and performed by the composer."
