Like fellow guitarists Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, or Tal Farlow, Mundell Lowe came to prominence in the late 1940s and early 1950s, yet never achieved the legendary status he deserved. After years of studio work in New York and Hollywood, Lowe, age 78 when he recorded this album, shows off an airy intimacy, expressiveness, and light--and a swinging understatement. The very stuff that dominated his early LPs makes this collaboration with German vibraharpist-harmonica whiz Hendrik Meurkens (recorded in Hamburg in 2000) wonderfully relaxed and intimate. Never a fan of velocity for its own sake, Lowe's velvet tonality and easygoing nature dominate "Mundell's Mood," the bossa nova number "Shoreway," and the loping "Please Let the Sun Come Out Again." Meurkens, a fine vibes player and a Toots Thielemans-like harmonica player, injects wit and spice into standards such as "You Say You Care" and "Opus 1," and the pair create particularly tasty interplay on "I'll Follow My Secret Heart" and "There Is No Greater Love." To any fan of classic or even contemporary jazz guitar, Lowe's autumnal virtuosity is inspirational. --Rich Kienzle

Pink swinging Jazz

"Light as a feather, delicious as a candy, airy as a spring breeze, fresh as mountain water this music from Meurkens and Lowe is quite good! Today I feel four stars about this record but it could be a serious five stars with few more listening sessions. As a Jazz guitarist myself I consider very good the contribution by Lowe, a young 78 Jazz cat still meauwling on the guitar with the same old freshness and autority. His tone is traditional fifties guitar sounds, velvet and percussive at the same time. I didn't know about Meurkens which is a really fine vibe player and probably the only one harmonica player which plays in a Thielemans style. He plays quite good even if Toots is obviously of another level. But I wont complain anyway. He plays great. I love the tune selection. The opener is a fast bop blues with a very nice line. I could quote a couple of similar lines from the fifties, one of them could be IN WALKED LILA. There are on this recording some very beautiful standards such as Darn that dream, Body and soul, There is no greater love, You say you care, perfect vehicles for good jazz improvisation. Very nice the bossa Shoreway. In the end a very relaxing listening because the overall sound composed by guitar, vibes and piano (with drums and double bass of course) produce a very PINK, delicate like a carillon astmosphere, even when the band swing hard. Very good!"
