Synopsis

Album Description
Some have pigeonholed Mudville?s timeless yet unmistakably forward music as a straight shot of Portishead-like downtempo electronica. But Mudville contorts that well-worn archetype into a stirring and soulful sonic brew, evoking Curtis Mayfield?s weighty grooves, P.J. Harvey?s avant-blues passion, Jeff Buckley?s soaring, jazzy laments and the futurist soundscapes of Dan the Automator. Noted multi-instrumentalist/producer Benjamin Rubin crafts Mudville?s musical universe with truly iconoclastic beats, found sounds and live instruments that spotlight songwriter/vocalist Marilyn Carino?s keen prose and dusky wail. Her strange, fearless voice is muse for Rubin?s unsettling yet compelling blend of churning beats and lush symphonic arrangements. The results are impassioned, humanistic inner monologues that paint gripping and unsentimental pictures of love, loss and the precarious state of our injured society.

CD Reviews

Somber Joy of Mudville

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Mudville is ultra modern yet very soulful. It is electronic music that packs the organic punch of the best blues and jazz. These songs groove along and lull you like still water with a fierce undertow, found in the moving, surprisingly poetic lyrics by Marilyn Carino, who also possesses a crazy voice with the gutsiness of a rock singer but with the sweet subtlety of a jazz balladeer. The beats and arrangements are like nothing I've heard before, kind of trip-hop with a brain and cojones, but it would be difficult to compare Mudville to anything else out there. It's definitely head music and I like it more the more I listen."

It's definitely deep head music and I like it more the more I listen."
