Synopsis

Amazon.com
Mozart didn't write very many symphonies in his last, most mature period, for the simple reason that the opportunities for performance were very limited. The piano concerto was his true medium, and anyone looking for masterpieces along the lines of his last six symphonies among the earlier works will be disappointed. This doesn't mean, however, that the music is anything less than entertaining, and that's just the aspect that Sir Charles Mackerras highlights in these fizzy performances. --David Hurwitz

Fine Performances of Symphonies from Mozart's Early Maturity
James Skrydlak | Pella, Iowa | 01/05/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Mackerras and the Prague Chamber Orchestra perform just as well here as they do in the other recordings of Mozart's earlier (before No. 31) symphonies. Four stars instead of five because the two best-known, and, in my opinion, best symphonies from this period, Nos. 25 and 29, are on another disc. Mozart was incapable of writing boring or poorly-crafted music, of course, so the four symphonies here are fine pieces; they just aren't, in my opinion, up to the level of Nos. 25 and 29."
Masterful Mozart

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a fine album for listeners building their Mozart symphonic collection. The recording quality is tranparent and natural sounding. The material speaks for itself - Mozart's magic touch is purely masterful. Conductor, Charles Mackerras, has a sensitive feel for Mozart's material giving an honest, spirited reading.

This is one of several Mozart symphony compilations I have from this series on Telarc records feauturing Mackerras. These recordings are great starting points for building a Mozart symphony collection though there might be better performances available on selected works. That these CD's are available for less than ten dollars makes them even sweeter."
