The exotic-sounding ensemble is a group of excellent period-instrument string players, most of them Dutch. In these performances they show the advantages of their instruments, not only in the transparency of the sound, but in the way they play more strongly on the softer-voiced instruments without overstressing the music. Both of these masterpieces are played extremely well; the close-up recording reveals every detail of the music, but virtually no flaws in the playing. Highly recommended, although those who wonder if they will like this music might want to try the much-less-expensive, very well played versions from the Eder Quartet (modern instruments) on Naxos. --Leslie Gerber

A truly mozartean spirit
KEPA M. ORMAZABAL | Basque Country | 02/03/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is the first volume of Mozart's string quintets recorded by Bylsma and his friends; there is a second one forthcoming. Mozart's music is worderful, though slightly more serious than usual, a feature that shows in the large scale dimension of the architecture of the music. This requires a subtle balance between introspection and outwardliness which is not easy to attain. Otherwise, this music takes on a rather stiff appearance, looks soulless and too lenghty. L'Archibudelli's interpretations are finely balanced: passionate at times, introspective at other times, they never lose sight of the entire work they are playing. Interest never decays and the pieces never look too lenghty, despite their large dimensions. Tuning and articulation are perfect. The recorded sound is excellent."
