Synopsis

Album Description
The two choral works here are ideally coupled, because they were recorded consecutively in late September 1975. * The French review magazine Diapason wrote of this Coronation Mass: "The choral and orchestral forces are very effective, the soloists prestigious and the conductor's interpretation spectacular and very lyrical", and of the Requiem: "The tempos are rapid, the chorus and orchestra weighty and sumptuous. This is one of the most flexible and accomplished versions of the work."

CD Reviews

A Mozart Twofer!
Robert M. Smith | 04/04/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This Mozart Requiem has garnished a reputation as possibly the finest of Karajan's traversals of this work since its appearance in 1975. With a first rate quartet of soloists rounding out the usual choral and BPO contributions, this rendition has had a series of superlative reviews. In this most recent reissue of a part of the Mozart complete edition, the Coronation Mass (with the same forces) has been added to create one generously filled offering of "sacred music" at nearly eighty minutes on one cd! (The front jacket seems to be just a reproduction of the Requiem issue, not suggesting the complete contents.)"
