Synopsis

Product Description
Throughout her career, flutist Sue Ann Kahn has been acclaimed for her virtuosic and sensitive performances of music of all periods. She was honored with one of the first Solo Recitalist Fellowships from the National Endowment of the Arts in recognition of her outstanding gifts as a flutist and received the American New Music Consortium Award for distinguished performances of contemporary music. She is a member of the Jubal Trio, the League ISCM Chamber Players and other ensembles. Ms. Kahn has received consistent praise for her solo and chamber music recordings (her highly popular disc of music of Jacques Ibert, Jacques Around the Clock, is on Albany TROY145). Formerly Professor of Music at Bennington College, Ms. Kahn teaches flute and chamber music at Mannes College of Music, at New York University, and in the Music Performance Program at Columbia University, and gives master classes and recitals nationwide. She has served as President of the National Flute Association, and has been consistently active as an advocate for the flute and its music.

CD Reviews

A complete gem
Lauren Olivia | Oakland, CA | 01/15/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"After listening to Sue Kahn's CD, I find it impossible to believe that Mozart wasn't enamored with the flute. These richly-textured pieces pull you in and engage on every level. Sue Kahn's high degree of mastery allows her a confidence that goes past fluidity and technical expertise. You can hear beauty and nuance and color throughout each quartet. It's easy to feel swept along by these very personal renditions, and the way they breathe new life into each expressive composition. I would be hard-pressed to suggest a more elegant and accomplished recording, or one I've enjoyed more. Sue Kahn's homage to Mozart is a gem. I wish I could offer more than five stars!"
Joyous and soulful

"A real discovery! The instrumental balance is superb; Kahn's flute clearly leads while weaving its sound tightly into the fabric of these pieces. But this is no slick presentation. These quartets are joyously and soulfully played. Listening to this CD makes you feel you KNOW this body of music as you would know a friend. I've played it over and over and I always find something new to enjoy and learn."
Beautiful, Stylish Mozart!

"An excellent recording of these wondefully charming works! The performance shows a true understanding of the Mozartian style, and repeated listenings only reveal greater treasures in both the works and the peformances (I've lost track of how many times I have listened to it by now!). I love the real chamber music approach that all the performers take (as opposed to some who treat these works like mini flute concerti!) - one feels like you are listening to a beautiful, intimate conversation among great friends. The whole package is as stylish as the performance: the notes (by Kahn herself) are informative, yet never dry and academic, and I very much like the more personal approach she takes in them. Even down to the cover art (I believe by the same photographer who was used for Richard Goode's equally wonderfully Mozart recordings), the whole cd will be a wonderful addition to the library of anyone who loves great chamber music playing and Mozart!"
