Synopsis

Album Description
World famous Spanish-born concert pianist José Iturbi (1895-1980) was renowned for his brilliant interpretations of Mozart. Restored and remastered from the original recordings made between 1937 and 1940, the disc features three of Mozart's masterpieces, all conducted from the keyboard by Mr. Iturbi. His sister, Amparo Iturbi joins him in the extraordinarily beautiful Two Piano Concerto. The clearness and fluency of interpretation and the crispness of execution, make these legendary performances a must for all serious collectors of great piano playing and, of course, elegant Mozart playing.

CD Reviews

Best Mozart Ever

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I own about 75 or 80 classical CD's, but this is the one I play constantly. It goes with me everywhere. In the car, at work, at home, this is what I listen to. When people talk about great pianists, why don't they mention Jose or Amparo Iturbi?

This CD is a real work of art, right from the turbulent opening of the D Minor Concerto to the playful finish of the E-flat major concerto for 2. You might think it's tempting to forget the Sonata sandwiched in between the two mind-boggling concertos -- until you hear it.

These are three unforgettable pieces of music, brilliantly executed by extraordinary musicians. Iturbi himself never played better than on this collection; furthermore he conducted the orchestra for both concertos from the keyboard. And if all that isn't enough, he wrote the cadenzas for the first and third movements of the E-flat major concerto. If you can tell where Iturbi leaves off and Mozart begins (or vice versa) you're a better musician than most.

Sound quality is excellent on this CD, and it's so reasonably priced as to be almost disappointing -- I'd expected to pay a lot more for this kind of brilliance. But that's okay, at the rate I play the thing I'll probably wear it out soon and have to buy another copy."
Enjoy it and buy it.

"To describe JI's sound and technically perfect music no words are allowed or needed, this is a must for all you Mozar-piano-player-lovers, and also, for all those that love good music and a player with a heart.

Some of the pieces will just make you shiver out of enjoyment."
