Pivotal Mott - essential early 70s rock
L. S. Slaughter | Chapel Hill, NC | 10/21/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"That period was a creative explosion, and Mott's jump to stardom from obscurity was one of the hallmarks of a special time alongside Dark Side of the Moon, Strawbs, Yes, Bowie, Lou Reed's Transformer... oh, the list is long.

Every song here has its strengths, and the production is cracker-jack. Remains my favorite version of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane," and "Sucker" is a fab Ian Hunter original.

A classic

"That's a '70's rock jewel. Ian Hunter is one of the best songwriters of all time, and he sings fine, a cross between Bob Dylan and David Bowie. The Bowie-penned title track is an instant classic. It also has some cool rockers like "One Of The Boys" and "Jerkin' Crokus", with great guitar work from the much-underrated Mick Ralphs. The opener, Dylan's "Sweet Jane" is just gracious, but the best song on this album is "Sucker", which shows Hunter's immense talent as a songwriter. You really can't go wrong with this one"
