All the texts are from Petrarca's Rime in vita e morta di Madonna Laura. The composers are many; the collection is something like the best of prima pratica madrigals, before Marenzio, Monteverdi and Gesualdo made their reforming contributions to madrigal composing. It is astonishing how daring dissonances some of the composers use - even before Marenzio was born! Paul van Nevel and the Huelgas Ensemble have a very special soft style, like velvet. These interpretations are immensely beautiful and touching."
