An Absolute Tour de Force by Two Brilliant Musicians
Paulo Weinberger | Sydney, Australia | 10/13/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album is one of those gems you'd be lucky to come across once in your lifetime - so please consider yourself extremely lucky and keep on reading. Brazil's long established and world famous Paulo Moura (sax/clarinet) teams up with USA's Cliff Korman (piano) in a live performance held in Genoa, Italy. Songs performed include "Luiza" (one of Antonio Carlos Jobim's masterpieces) and "Tico-Tico no Fubá" (a marvellous song by Zequinha de Abreu which has been a synonym with Brazil and Brazilian 'chorinho' - it's one of Brazil's popular national anthems - since the days of Carmen Miranda). There's a medley of songs by Pixinguinha and Duke Ellington - a witty and beautiful example of the kind of fun these two amazingly creative musicians must have been having ever since they met somewhere in heaven, having left life here on earth. The talent and creativity of Paulo Moura and Cliff Korman are astounding. Paulo Moura is Brazil's greatest saxophone and clarinet player: his prowess defies explanation. Cliff Korman, who has adopted Brazil as his second country and has played with some of Brazil's best musicians, is quickly becoming one of the top musicians in the world. This is an awesome, almost never-ending, sequence of inspiring performances probably designed to make one wonder how on earth (or in heaven) anyone can play like that. Just listen to Track 11 ("Leninha & Espinha de Bacalhau"), or pick any one at random, and you'll understand what I mean. This whole album is absolutely wonderful, so don't even blink: buy it straight away - and you'll never cease to be amazed."

"One of the best live jazz performances I've ever heard on cd. Truly wonderful. This album has the ability to transport you to another world. It is such a relaxing album, but not in the kind of way that will put you to sleep. You will want to stay awake to listen to every wonderful song. The Duke Ellington/Pixinguinha medley is a delight. And not just that medley, but the whole album flows seamlessly .. it's almost like a marriage between North and South America. And a marriage that works. And Cliff and Paulo each contribute a composition of their own .. Cliff's is actually a choro, and it is beautiful. This is an album that every jazz lover should have in their collection. I can't recommend it highly enough!"
