These are not serious piano concertos. They are charming exercises in what was once called light music. Montague Phillips could write music that is pleasant, well orchestrated, nicely shaped, and ultimately very nice to have in the background when you are doing something else and don't want to be distracted by any original thoughts. Incidentally it would be nice to have a recording of his musical/operetta The Rebel Maid. The delight of this CD is to be found in the Hely-Hutchison. The Young Idea -- which is also the title of an early Noel Coward play of around the same time -- is a mad exercise in combining jazz and pop of the period in a little fantasia for piano and orchestra. It's a light hearted forerunner of Constant Lambert's The Rio Grande." |
