CD Reviews

Probably 3 1/2 stars

(3 out of 5 stars)

"Norrington's performance of the great "Missa Solemnis" is characterized by clarity, speed and execution, as you might expect. It is not a highly devotional performance and ends more abruptly than most. The orchestra, choir and soloists all perform well under his baton.

I thought it a worthwhile effort when I acquired it. However, it has not stood up well over time for me. I enjoy the Schemerhorn-Nashville effort on Naxos (which was released some years after this one) more today. Of the better "Missa" I've owned this lifetime, this one pales compared to Wand (reissued in recent years on Testament) and Bernstein's old Concertgebouw recording. It is comparable to Gardiner's period version from about 1990.

If you have a long time favorite in this work, especially if that one is led by a more conservative conductor with a big band approach, you probably will be disappointed by this or find it superficial. If you are looking for a different approach or are adventurous and seeking something different, this will give you greater satisfaction."
