Synopsis

Marketed mainly as a sexpot by her former record company, Mindy McCready chafed against that image ("I always wanted to say important things") and finally left the label altogether. But maybe she was on the right track to start with. The most memorable songs on her new Capitol album mine the same light vein as the majority of her RCA hits ("Guys Do It All the Time") but lack the knockout punch that earned her platinum status. She scores points for finding a good, left-wing cheating song, "Lovin' Your Man," told from the point of view of the errant best friend. And she's believable on "Scream," in which a spurned woman struggles to deal with the anger of romantic failure. But otherwise, this "country" album just floats by on a sea of homogenized L.A. pop. By its end, you don't even remember who's singing. Or care. --Alanna Nash

Underrated CD

"Mindy McCready left her previous record label BNA back in 1999 after her album I'M NOT SO TOUGH flopped, it was over creative differences. Later in 2000 she signed with Capitol. The song "Scream" was leaked, the first single, long before the album came out. The song didn't catch on with radio unfortunately, it's a monster ballad that she sings with conviction and passion. The album was slated to have 11 songs, with two that did not make the cut. "Why We Love" and "Sacrifice", two great ballads that should have been on. Instead they worked on the album again and before it was released, she recorded two new songs, one which was the next single. "Maybe, Maybe Not" was a song written by fellow country singer Mila Mason (who also has her own version out now) which is a fun bubbly song that had a great video too. Once again failed to capture anyone's attention at CMT or country radio. A last ditch attempt was when they released the uptempo, tongue in cheek song "Lips Like Yours" which is a great song, but went nowhere. It's too bad the album didn't receive more attention, because it's some of the best music she's made. The other new song she recorded was "Be With Me", which should have been a single, a nice midtempo song about devotion. She covered Chely Wright's "The Fire", and gave it her own style. "Tremble" is the best ballad on the album, it should have been a single, it's just a great song that would have exploded at country radio. The ballad "Lovin Your Man" is a really great country song about being the other woman, the one the man cheats on his wife with. It's a great song. Other favorites include "If I Feel Your Hand". The only song that I didn't care for really was the Phil Vassar penned "Don't Speak", but it's still alright. The album is great, so check it out, you don't know what you're missing."
Great songs, great voice!

"Honestly, I don't know why this album isn't getting more attention! This album contains incredible songs sung by an incredible voice. My favorite songs are "Maybe, Maybe Not," and "Lips Like Yours." Here is my description of every song on this album:1)Maybe, Maybe Not - The best song on this album! Mindy's voice
perfectly matches the cutesy mood of this song, and it's a
very catchy tune that gets you humming along. Amazing song.2)Lips Like Yours - The second best song on the album! It's very
different from "Maybe, Maybe Not." Less cutesy, but just as
catchy. A wonderful song.3)Lovin' Your Man - I like it better now that I've heard it a
couple of times. At first, I didn't like it because I thought
that it was too slow and boring, but now I've gotten used to
it. Still not the best song on the album, although Mindy is
very believable in this song.4)Be With Me - Great song! It has an upbeat tempo that keeps you
listening. I love the chorus.5)The Fire - I really like this song. It's sung with passion,
the tune gets you humming along. It also has an upbeat tempo.6)Scream - I love this song. Like "The Fire," it's sung with
passion, and Mindy's voice is incredible during the chorus.
This is an emotional song, although it is also a fast song.
This song gets you riled up!7)I Just Want Love - A different kind of song, but in a good way.
It has a Spanish influence, and I heard it on some Spanish soap
opera sung entirely in Spanish by a different person. Mindy
does an excellent job singing it.8)Dont Speak - This is a really nice song. It's has a sharper
edge than most of the songs on this album, and it keeps you
listening.9)If I Feel Your Hand - Not one of the catchiest songs on the
album. The lyrics to this song are very nice, if sad.
This is an emotional song, and Mindy does a great job with it.10)You Get To Me - Nice song. Not one of the most memorable
songs, but it's much better than "Lovin' Your Man." 10)Tremble - A song sung with real passion. A wonderful
ending! I especially love the way that she just belts it out! In conclusion this album is wonderful. When I first listened to it, I thought that it was going to be a huge hit. I just don't know why this album isn't getting more attention - I like this album much better than her older ones."
Good Album from a struggling singer

"I remember Mindy's first CD, which was just awesome. Then she just kinda disappeared from videos and radio. This is a strong effort to return to the scene. She never quite blows me away (except maybe on "Scream"), but it's a fun cd with some really cute songs. "Maybe, Maybe Not" and "Lips like Yours" are the most fun, with "Lovin' Your Man" and "Don't Speak" have a haunting quality that just makes me want to learn all the words and sing it for my friends. But "Scream" is by far the best song on the CD; the lyrics are to the point ("Lips" gets almost lost in all the commentary) and Mindy puts the right emotion into, i can almost see her yelling at the rain. It's definitely worth the money to buy this CD. Although the difference in the lyrics for "The Fire" from Chely Wright's has been really puzzling me. Anyway.... Given more time and support (this album seems more like a first album than her fourth) Mindy should develop more of the power that is so respected in female singers these days."
