CD Reviews

A perfect introduction to Mina's golden years

"Mina is Italian legend, icon that started her career in late 1950's and went through numerous changes all the way up to the present, still active and still adored by fans.Gifted with strong voice, charismatic personality and clear vision of herself as a STAR,she survived many of her contemporairies who started at the same time - in fact,I think italians often take her for granted because she is here all the time. She sang many lightweight songs in her formative years ("Tintarella di Luna") but eventually she metamorphised in sophisticated lady with alltogether different music style, perfectly presented in this compilation."Minananthology" is her early 1970's peak as a heartbreak-tears-and-more-heartbreak singer, many now "classic" hits are here ("Parole Parole","Insieme",even later Shirley Bassey covered "Grande Grande Grande").There are many compilations of her work before ("Supermina" covers "poppy" begginings from which one would never guess she would emerge as a much interesting personality in her later years) and after ("Studio collection"),but I think she was at her best at the time presented here - music is heavily orchestrated and preformed with incredible theatrical flavour she honed to perfection. On the disc 1 there are some annoying fake "live" hand-clapping from audience, obviously studio and live recordings are mixed together, but that was a popular thing at the time.I really would like to hear from some italian a bit more about her, since I noticed big similarity between her and french singer Dalida (who sound to my ears like Mina's french spiritual sister) - both women obviously sang about heartbreak and drama, but in their voices one can hear defiance and self-confidence,I-will-survive-after-heartbreak pose.If you are curious what shaped Euro-music scene in early 1970's,this is a perfect introduction."

"This CD includes the great hits from the 70's and some not so well known music. Mina's versatility, technical abitlity, together with her natural sexual and emotional delivery make this CD a necessary addition to my collection."
A must for any Mina aficionado!
