CD ReviewsSomething New and Vital Being Born Van Isle Rev | Vancouver Island, British Columbia | 06/09/2010 (4 out of 5 stars) "Fans of Miles early forays into the world of electrified music (i.e.fusion) will find this release of great interest. Boasting the same line-up (minus percussionist Airto Moreira) as the 2-CD "It's About That Time", these recordings present Davis' short-lived line-up of Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Jack DeJonnette at an early stage in its development. ("It's about that time", recorded at the Fillmore East, dates from March 1970; "Live in Berlin" was recorded the previous November, with three bonus tracks coming even earlier, from a July 1969 appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival). The recording quality here leaves something to be desired; hence four stars rather than five. The music itself, however, is pure magic; marvellous to hear this quintet in the white-hot process of discovering their corporate identity (the recording boasts older Davis staples such as "Milestones" and "'Round Midnight", side by side with newer material such as "Bitches Brew") even as they open up whole new vistas in the wonderful world of jazz. Definitely worth checking out."
