Synopsis

Album Description
Mick Overman's third MAX RECORDS CD explores the distance a person's soul gets/has to travel in a lifetime. It's also about the miles on the odometer. Fans of his live performances have encouraged him to do an acoustic project for years. Having spent the better part of the last several of them on the road, averaging 300 shows per year up and down the west coast, it was the only thing that made sense. His hand written message inside the CD says it all: "It's all acoustic, live in the studio, no overdubs, and we left all the mistakes in! It contains 7 brand new songs and 6 personal favorites. It's the real deal! The intensity and purity of the tracks are equal to the simplicity and lack of pretense of the recording as a whole. Longtime Van Morrison bassist, bandleader and co-producer David Hayes brings additional magic to the session. Rising mandolin hero David Pugh is in all the right places at all the right times. The Goddess is a Rockin' Babe (3) is a scream - bound to be a favorite among programmers. Amos Talks in Riddles (7) is a lyrically potent journey through symbolism and surrealism reaching out towards the impending millennium. Get the Lead Out (6) is a straight ahead blues rocker showcasing Overman's "take no prisoners" style of unaccompanied slide guitar playing. Heard You Cryin' Late One Night (2) is an up tempo blues concluding with a hopeful note for mankind. Again, Mick's solo lead guitar style is highlighted. Good For My Soul (12) just plain rips. Hayes just plain rips. The ballads Hear Me Now (1) and Soften the Rough Edges of the Night (9) ooze with sincerity and Hayes again will just break your heart on Soften... Mileage is a warm, personal and pleasurable experience without a wasted minute. Overman's passionate, original songs are performed with emotional urgency that comes across musically and lyrically. The covers fit perfectly with the mood of the album and Overman's splendid acoustic style, additionally offering some great numbers rarely or never covered before. It's a musical journey worth every magic mile, a definite keeper!

CD Reviews

Once Isn't Enough
06/26/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"It was terrific the first time I heard it, now it's even better. Mick has the strength of constant performing, combined with the freshness and emotion of a bunch of new material. Is it the guitar, the band, or the vocals that hit me the most? His acoustic guitar is just wonderful, and he has an impressive team of musicians complimenting him. His lyrics are personal and universal. I think I'm most affected by his voice, although I don't know how to describe it. He's really great and deserves to be heard."
