Synopsis

Album Description
NYC producer MICHNA (SFC, Bonde Do Role, Diplo) comes correct with skullsnap bets and playful electronics by the pound. With each song, Michna pumps city grit into the watery graves of mixtapes past. Post-bass, ambient, whispers of acid jazz, it's all there. Magic Monday is an international biopic, but one that is both timeless and genreless.

Audio postcards from NYC
Crissa-Jean Chappell | Miami, FL United States | 10/16/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"In his eclectic solo debut, Magic Monday, New York-based DJ, Adrian Michna, samples bits of audio flotsam like Morse Code: skateboards rattling across concrete, the insectoid drone of a scooter., car horns bleating against the surf sounds of traffic. All fair game. But there is also the stuttering pulse of an air hockey puck, swirling ocean waves and birdlike whistles. Broken sentences. Jokey voicemail messages. Postcards sent through a pair of headphones.

Michna, co-founder of the electro trio, Secret Frequency Crew, has always had a knack for blending organic sounds, such as the golden wahh waah of a trombone, with computerized blips and beats. Standout tracks include Bumper Car Masters, with its rollicking drum machine thump and infectious melody. Do What You Want To Do, a metronome march, builds into a call and response between human voices and jubilant "high score" twinkles. Italian Visitor's hand-clapping beat and glistening chords recall the jazz-injected hip hop that is New York's legacy, but the single, Triple Chrome Dipped, is pure Miami in the rump-shaking bassline.

"Do I have to go home?" somebody groans in the background.

Magic Monday is a glorious love letter to Michna's hometown, signed not with a kiss, but with a high five.
