CD Reviews

The 2001 reedition of Zarrillo's 2000 album
Ivo Tremont | Houston, TX United States | 05/30/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This repackaged edition of "Il vincitore non c'e' " was launched in the spring of 2001 with two bonus tracks: "L'acrobata" and "Bellissima". Both songs are sweet but with different tonalities (l'acrobata is nostalgic, bellissima has a faster tempo, a newer style by MZ, and concerns a frivolous beutiful woman who plays with others' feelings). This edition is also cheaper than the 2000 version, which goes from $22 to 40$ by some third-party vendors!

Aside from these features, this album found MZ and his lyricist for nearly all the songs, Vincenzo Incenzo, in a creative and fresh mood. The anthem song is undoubtedly Il vincitore non c'e' and its reprise, both with an energizing pop flavor seldom found in previous MZ's albums. The reprise is fantastic, beginning with orchestra, followed by guitars and electronic style rhythms, and finishing with a desperate voice reminding us that in love conflicts there is no winner. The rest of the songs are encased within the romantic line that has Zarrillo's signature, yet each one of these songs is distinct from each other. "Cercandoti" (Seaching for you) is good example of reinvigorated poetry masterfully combined with music, music with delicious acoustic guitars and orchestral arrangements. And there, Michele's peculiar voice adding a sense of desperation and resignation.

For me this is MZ at his best, followed by "le occasioni dell' amore" a double live album recorded at the end of 2001 and his latest release from 2006."
