CD Reviews

Appealing, beguiling music!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I'm a fan of much of Michael Torke's music already, and this is the only recently-released recording of any of his music. Mostly, he writes for large forces (full orchestra, opera), so it's something special when he writes a solo piece. The usual new price gave me pause, but ordering it through a secondary vendor saved a couple of dollars. The audio sample is of the very beginning, where it gets underway as a mellow, somewhat new-agish piece (but with more energy). As it unfolds, however, the material builds in excitement and certainly in virtuosity, with some dramatic modulations, and a fine sense of direction. New age music that actually goes somewhere? No, it's much more than that, but if you're one of those people who enjoys some new age piano for a minute or two, and then is diving for the controls to shut it off (that's me!), I believe you'll really enjoy this very appealing piece. I listened to it about 20 times in the first week. It's quite addictive!"
