Brilliant Work from a Writer in Touch with Himself
Carter Monroe | Mount Olive, NC United States | 03/23/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I received this tape in the mail three days ago. Have since listened to it four times from beginning to end with certain selections played even more. It is absolutely wonderful. Not only does Michael Smith review his life lyrically, but the music is as tasteful and poignant as it gets. Family, church, and school days eventually lead to music, literature, and coffee houses, with lost child and adult fantasies and perceptions reviewed as time intertwines. No musical memoir has held such an appeal for me since THE BALLAD OF SALLY ROSE by Emmylou Harris. It is a work which merits one's complete attention, as every detail exudes significance. This creative vision is one which cannot be overly recognized. It's great to see a true poet emerge from this world where too many people fancy themselves as such. Right on, Michael!"
I have worn out the tape, so I'll have to buy the CD

"Michael Smith is recognized by many artists as the finest songwriter in the folk genre. A friend of mine made a tape of this from a CD he bought from the artist a number of years ago. The songs are incredible. The production in clean. After listening you feel as though you are intimate with Michael's family. We have nearly worn out the tape. While some of these songs have appeared elsewhere, the arrangements here are different. For example, Elizabeth Dark and I Brought My Father With Me appear on Time, but here additional instruments are added, which add rather than detract from the poignancy of these songs. If you don't have any Michael Smith, this is a good place to start."
