No one is doing what Michael does, and does spectacularly, on "Red River Redux". There are traditional songs ostensibly so hackneyed and cliche'd you're surprised anyone would record them -- but so re-imagained and entirely refreshed as to have been written yesterday. There are pop and country songs from the recent past that have been forgotten or never quite made it, here brought completely to life and relevance. And finally, originals written on such a large canvas and with such conviction and unique perspective that they bring a tear to your eye. His guitar playing has been compared to that of Leo Kottke and Doc Watson, his song-writing to that of Woody Guthrie and early Bob Dylan. No one else in contemporary music is doing what Michael Koppy attempts and entirely achieves here.
