Exotic Chillout vibe
05/21/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

" Pierre ZonZon*  blew into Miami Beach on the tail of "Hurricane Andrew" in 1992 and the place hasn't been the same since. Quickly establishing himself as a resident DJ on the back patio of the seminal club Bash, Pierre introduced world music to the burgeoning Miami club scene of the time with his eclectic international mixes and exotic rhythms. His photography career started here too, shooting for both Bash and other outside productions.
It was all a matter of course for Pierre, as worldly as the music he mastered on the decks. Born in Paris, France, of Martinique descent, Pierre moved to London at 18 but was soon traveling the world as Disc Jockey for Club Med, living by turns in Turkey, Tunisia, Greece, Mexico and throughout the Caribbean. Fourteen countries in ten years, he soaked up the local sounds in each of his temporary homes before moving on to the next exotic locale.
Pierre further perfected his world beat style in the dance clubs of New York City in the late 1980s and early `90s
before packing up for good and heading to sunny Miami. These days you can find Pierre spinning his exotic rhythms at the popular Skybar by night, while exporting the South Beach sound to the rest of the world through the influential dance label SFP by day, a label he started with fellow DJ's  Marc Sacheli*  and  Ivano Bellini* .
The tracks on this cd are at the heart of Pierre's style, his second solo DJ compilation for the label and hopefully not his last. From world music to world beat, the cosmopolitan sound Pierre is known for and what you hear on
"Miami Private", has evolved into something he calls "exotic rhythm". It's a fitting name to a style of downtempo lounge that takes you on a musical journey around the world with the ease of a first class seat on the airline of your dreams.
From the opening track "Amaravatti" by Sofian Rouge, we greet the dawn with a wash of enchanting sounds like the best of Yanni (an early influence on Pierre) before the rhythms of India kick in. Follow that with a tango trip to "Buenos Aires", then off to the Middle East, Spain, Brazil, England, the Caribbean and Southeast Asia, with several stopovers in America before another go round the globe.
Despite all the rhythmic globetrotting, "Miami Private"is a consistently strong and cohesive compilation, thanks to your tour guide:  Pierre ZonZon* , a DJ who knows how to make your travel experience both memorable and easy. So open your ears, sit back, and enjoy the ride.John C. Anderson"
