Synopsis

Album Description
Horror romantics, vampiresque twist, sci-fi western with zombies instead of cowboys surfing from song to song on coffin lids... Sinister optimism... A comic book for music enthusiasts... This perfectly describes Messer Chups' second U.S. album Hyena Safari which follows 2005's acclaimed Crazy Price released on Mike Patton's Ipecac Recordings. The trashy sci-fi horror sound of Messer Chups is not very common within the context of Russian rock music. The reason for this is the good old cold-war/iron curtain commie agenda. The majority of Messer Chups' musical and visual aesthetics come from trashy western pop-culture of the past century. This includes horror/sci-fi b-movies from 1930's through 1970's, as well as music such as surf (The Ventures, Dick Dale, Trashmen), big-band lounge (Henry Mancini, Les Baxter, Martin Denny) and rock n' roll of the 60's. Since the Ipecac release, Messer Chups has slowly developed a cult following around the world as one of the most unique and genre-defiant bands. Hyena Safari takes Messer Chups into a virtually live territory, with the album being driven by the classic surf sound played entirely by Oleg Gitarkin on guitars and Zombie Girl on bass. Hyena Safari is the soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction set to a horror movie! Also features FIVE bonus videos!

CD Reviews

Satanic Russian surf rock on acid
McSpunkle | USA | 11/21/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Zombie go-go dancers mingling with glow in the dark skeletons. Killer surf guitar spliced with B-grade horror movie samples and crazy synthesizers. If The Ventures were tripping in a haunted house with Ed Wood and Quentin Tarentino, this is the album they would make. Get it... your Halloween party depends on it."
