Synopsis

Album Description
"There's no need to argue. Merzbow stands as the most influential figure in noise music." -- All Music Guide Author, activist, painter, and sound artist Masami Akita has been at the foreground of experimental music for over 25 years. Inspired by psychedelic rock, free jazz, early electronic composition, and physical arts--especially Kurt Schwitters' Merzbau--Akita has created a musical language all his own. Dolphin Sonar is Merzbow's full-length protest album against the annual brutal slaughtering of some 2,500 dolphins in Japan. This is an angry album full of beats, blasts, and broken glass. Clattering smashes are pursued by pulsing analog whirls like the heart of a dolphin being chased through the bloodied water. Another Merzbow classic with the finest cover art money can buy by Jenny Akita. Liner notes by activist group Sea Shepherd.

CD Reviews

Merzbow's Noise Tribute To Majestic Dolphins !
Brien Comerford | Glenview, Illinois United States | 09/08/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Fortunately "Dolphin Sonar" is one of Merzbow's more mellow noise music CDs. Merzbow is the only noise music artist that I listen to because he's very talented and the blistering and discordant sounds that he generates periodically transform into semi-ambient soundscapes. Since 2001 the themes for the vast majority of his CD releases accentuate animal rights. The intermittent violence and sonic grandeur of Merzbow's music can be cathartic. "Dolphin Sonar" is very listenable and Merzbow does manage to create some noises that are veritably akin to the marine ecosystems wherein dolphins swim. This CD is a must buy for noise music fans and it might appeal to open-minded wildlife lovers and animal rights advocates who enjoy other musical genres. Merzbow is a unique and compassionate Japanese musical artist. Do not play this over volume level 4.5."
