(4 out of 5 stars)

"Merge's strong debut Lost Heroes is a must for any fan of synth-pop or darkwave. It has elements of goth in the deep vocal style and darker lyrics, but man, can these guys write killer refrains. I immediately took to "Lost In Eternity," "Autumn Leaf," and "Heaven Is A Tragedy," which are fantastic examples of their style. Full of melodic changes, they jam! Another bonus is the mix of synths and guitar, it works very well here. In some cases, it kind of adds an atmospheric and dreamy quality like with "Believe The Unbelievable," "Lost Heroes," "Black To White," all mid tempo tracks. Merge also deliver a couple slower numbers like "Ocean Rain" and "Kill Me." "Twice" and "Silver Rainbow" are decent too along with the flamenco guitar in "Isolated," which shows the bands range. I recommend more than one listen for the overall picture, but it isn't hard to M-E-R-G-E..."
