This boxed set of the Gewandhaus Orchestra conducted by Kurt Masur playing Mendelssohn's orchestral works is just breathtaking for the purity of the sound. The Gewandhaus Orchestra is famed for its "dark brass" timbre, but on this collection of recordings, Masur gets the strings to play beautifully as well. The symphonies are lovely and the inclusion of the entire Midsummer's Night Dream is a great addition. These are recordings you will listen to again and again."
