"These two piano trios were written by a mature Mendelssohn, in 1839 (at age 30), and 1845 for the second trio, Opus 66. Both show the splendid piano writing that, in some other recordings, overshadows the other two instruments. But the Vienna Piano Trio, along with the recording engineers, have captured the complete threesome in a well-balanced and pleasing way. These are Mendelssohn's finest chamber pieces in my opinion, and this Nimbus release is a good one."
