Terrific recording of Mendelssohn's (too often) overlooked o

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Between Händel and Franz Liszt, the organ repertoire amounts to a whole lot of nothing, for about a century. The one significant exception to this is Mendelssohn, whose lifelong interest in the organ was crucial in reviving the instrument in Germany.

Remarkably few comprehensive recordings of Mendelssohn's organ compositions are currently available. While this collection omits a few of the smaller works, it includes the Opus 37 Preludes & Fugues as well as some of his most mature & carefully composed works, the Opus 65 Sonatas. Also included are some of the movements which Mendelssohn ultimately discarded from the Sonatas.

It is surprising that nobody has thus far reviewed these recordings, which were released over a decade ago. John Scott's interpretation is superb, and as usual, Hyperion's sound quality is second to none (so important when it comes to choral & organ music). I would highly recommend this to any fan of Mendelssohn, or anyone who loves the organ music of the Romantic era."
